Q:What is your personal experience about studying accounting , and why did you choose accounting as your major?

A:I didn’t actually major in accounting when I was studying in university. I was a liberal arts major studying humanities, so my field of interest was about as far from accounting as possible. It was only after I came to China that I started learning about the accounting profession in-depth, and then I worked towards my designation after going to Canada.

Q;Have you ever flinched from the difficulties encountered in the course of learning? And how do you overcome it?

A:I would guess that my initial introduction to accounting studies was not too different from any other student. There were times when I would have to read some financial accounting sections over and over again because I didn’t understand anything. It just goes to show that accounting is a language all by itself! But looking back, I think the best way to look at things is that you will always come across a challenge, whether in academics, profession, or just life. It’s up to you to decide how or even if you want to overcome it, and whether it’s “easy” or “difficult” doesn’t really matter anymore.

Q:What is your first impression of ZUFE?

A:ZUFE is great! Hangzhou is also a wonderful city. I’ve met a lot of students from ZUFE from the LU partnership, and it’s always fun to meet ZUFE students and hear about their impressions of accounting, or to learn about their hopes and dreams. I’ve also made some pretty good friends from ZUFE because of the dual degree program. It’s a special feeling to make friends with someone in one country, such as Canada, and then meet with them again in China and reflect back on our shared experiences.

Q:Heard you graduated from Laurentian University. What do you think of Laurentian University and the city of Sudbury?

A:Doing the MBA program at LU was definitely my favorite academic experience. Sudbury always has a special place in my heart, and I’m always happy to go back and visit. The learning environment during my time there was very intimate, and all my professors were accessible and friendly. I always think of Sudbury as a city that has everything you need and a good city for new students to acclimate themselves to Canadian life. Some of my favorite memories of Sudbury are as simple as sitting in front of my window on those cold winter days just watching the snow fall and cover everything in white.

Q:What other skills do you think people who work in accounting can improve themselves ? Like programming.

A:From a professional standpoint, “Big Data” is something that every accountant is definitely going to have to learn in order to succeed in the profession. Learning about accounting standards is just half of accounting education now, and students have to think about how all these standards and systems integrate with technology to connect the world. From a personal standpoint, students always have to keep an open mind. You never really know what will happen in the future, so it’s important that students always look for new opportunities that will enable their personal growth in addition to their professional development.

Q:In your opinion , What is the difference between Introductory Financial Accounting (IFA)  in Canada and China? Could you give us some advice about learning CPA Canada?

A:Learning accounting is always a challenge, and it’s even more challenging when you have to learn it in a second language. Think of it like physical exercise. You won’t see immediate improvement in your body after doing ten pushups, or even twenty, or even one hundred. But if you keep at it, and you keep practicing, one day everything will suddenly *click* and it will all make sense. That means commitment, practice, repetition, and above all else, not giving up.

Q:What books do you recommend for our professional study?

A:For professional study, the best books to read are your textbooks! I’m serious, just because your textbook is required for your course doesn’t mean it’s not interesting. You have to remember that real human beings wrote these books just for students in mind, and these authors have taken the time to add all sorts of interesting stories and cases to help you find the relevance in what you’re learning. Take the time to read about the authors, read the chapter introductions, and look at the mini-cases as little stories instead or required readings. I learned about Steam Whistle Brewing just from reading about them in one of my MBA textbooks, and that lead me to searching for their brewery in Toronto, and that in turn led me to learn more about how to enjoy beer!

Q:Outside of class, Could you recommend some interesting books for us?

A:Aside from your required class readings, it’s always important to just read something, anything else. Read anything else that interests you, but make sure that it’s truly something that you find interesting. Don’t search out something to read because you think it will impress someone or make you sound smart. I’ve recently been reading different biographies, not of famous business people, but just anyone who sounds interesting, just to learn about how different people throughout history lived. I haven’t read Steve Jobs’ biography, but the person who wrote it, Walter Isaacson, is a very accomplished author and he wrote a fascinating biography of Benjamin Franklin that I’m currently reading.

Q:In your opinion , What is the hardest part of studying IFA for Chinese students?

A:I think the hardest thing for new students is just getting started. It’s sort of like climbing a mountain. The hard part is in the beginning, when everything is new and you’re not quite sure what to do. But once you find your groove things start to make more sense, and things don’t seem hard anymore, because you know what you have to do to accomplish your goal. If you’ve climbed to the middle of the mountain, you can’t just give up and stop, and going back down the way you came doesn’t make much sense, so you have to keep moving onwards and upwards. It’s just finding that groove that’s the biggest challenge, and some students find it earlier than others. That’s why it’s always important to ask questions if you don’t understand anything! As instructors, we are always there to help you find your accounting groove

Q:Finally, what a one sentence do you want to say to the students most?

A:You only have one life, so learn to have some fun with it!
